MONTEREY IS BACK!   After it's original debut in the early 30's and 40's this exceptional line of furniture is once again in production in California. Warren Hile Studio, known for it's classic Mission replication work, is embracing the Early Californian flavor of the Spanish Revival era with its first offering - the Monterey Living Room Suite. Perfectly reproduced down to the hand-painted panels and hand-wrought iron hardware, these pieces are beautiful to look at and comfortable to use.  "Furniture Style, INFurniture 2004"

THE DESIGN
Each piece has been painstakingly measured from an original and carefully replicated.   Pieces such as the coffee table are designed by WARREN HILE STUDIO and are in keeping with the Look.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Historically, MONTEREY FURNITURE was made in Alder and we have continued with this choice of wood.   The joinery includes mortise and tenon. The hardware is hand-wrought iron. The Juan Intenoche caricatures, panels and the floral painting are hand painted by a local artisan.

The upholstery for the bottom seat is a solid foam core with a polyester case. The cushion is a down-filled linen bag. The support is authentic hand-strung rope.

The Monterey Prohibition Bar also features locally fired-tile and hand-hammered copper tops.

LEATHER AND STAIN CHOICES
Leather choices are Santa Fe or Diablo Walnut leather. COM is welcomed.

Stain choices are Old Wood, Old Red, Spanish Green, Crackle and Smokey Maple.   Email us for help with choices.   A process using rottenstone is applied for the "aged" look.

ALL PIECES ARE MADE IN THE USA, right here in Monrovia California!

History
Warren Hile Studio introduces Monterey Furniture another finer example of nostalgic furniture, a specialty of Hile Studio, Inc. Its comfortable, live-in appearance conjures up wonderful evenings by the fire and days of simple pleasures. Monterey furniture is a whimsical combination of wood, leather, hand wrought iron and hand painting that originated during the Spanish Revival Movement in the late 1920's. In 1929, Barker Brothers, a Los Angles Furniture Retailer, had the foresight to contact Mason Manufacturing to create a line of furniture to embrace the Spanish Revival Period. Armed with a promotional poster from the Warner Brothers movie " In Old Arizona", which displayed rustic, Spanish type furniture, George and Frank Mason set out to create furniture for the Spanish-style homes popping up all over Los Angles. In less than a year, Mason had developed a 24- piece line of furniture for Barker Brothers and thus, Monterey Furniture was born, the first production furniture style that California could call its own.

Hile Studio, as craftsmen of fine replications from the American Arts & Crafts Movement, is a keen student of the historically correct way to design, construct and finish Mission Oak Furniture. Warren Hile's mission is to recreate Monterey Furniture from the Spanish Revival Movement with the same passion and zeal that has propelled Hile Studio to the premier manufacture of contemporary furniture inspired by the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

Details

Finishes
Hile Studio has replicated many of the original distinct finishes of Mason's Classic period. The finishes are complex with several steps to obtain the effect of old wood. Warren Hile has formulated the Monterey finishes to mirror the original palette with the passion and attention to detail he used to develop his Mission finishes. Once the desired color is correct, a rotten stone or powder finish is applied to produce a dusty, aged appearance.

Wood
Hile Studio, like Mason takes a great deal of time to make the furniture look old. Alder is sanded in much the same way as back in the 1930's to create a textured surface. The edges were rounded and all sides and corners of the furniture were roughed up to show signs of wear. Grooves were sanded into the wood to further enhance the furniture's old and worn appearance.

Rope
Another characteristic of the Classic period was the use of rope. It functioned as seat bottoms for the chairs, sofas and footstools.

Iron Works
The Spanish had been known for centuries for their expert use of hand-wrought iron. Mason ingenious use of iron to enhance the furniture is captured at Hile. Warren has incorporated scored hammer marks on the straps and hardware to create an illusion of hand-forged iron.

Tile and Copper Detail
As an artist, Warren since of form and function integrated in his designs are hallmarks of Hile Studio. California tiles decorate wrought iron tabletops and the Prohibition era bar incorporates the use of orange and black Catalina tile for the bar top along with copper lined shelves. An important element of the Spanish Revival architecture, California tile motifs are designed by Warren Hile or arranged to meet the creative innovations of our customer.

Painted Panels
Juan Intenoche a Mexican cartoonist managed and directed the painting department at Mason. The Spanish Revival architecture utilized decorative paintings on walls and the beamed ceilings that Intenoche had so cleverly injected into Monterey furniture. All Warren Hile Monterey furniture that displays the whimsical characters of Juan Intenoche or the unique floral designs of the period is hand painted at Hile Studio. Warren has created several original decorative patterns that are hand painted by Warren himself.

Collectors
Monterey furniture's rustic charm conjures up the excitement and glamour of early Hollywood. The infectious desire that compelled Will Rogers and Clark Gable to adorn their California rancho or Classic Spanish Revival homes with Monterey furniture back in the 1930's is the same attraction that Diane Keaton and other collectors have today. Unique well made furniture that has comfort and a distinct style. Warren Hile's Monterey Furniture mission is to provide the same quality furniture that is well crafted with quality materials and an attention to detail that George and Frank Mason gave us 70 years ago.
