History

As craftsmen of fine replications from the American Arts & Crafts movement, we are keen students of the historically correct way to design, construct and finish our Mission furniture. Original pieces from this period are still in use ... 90 years later! You can be certain that any piece of furniture from Hile Studio will last well into the next century.

Every piece is made of the finest hand-selected quarter-sawn white oak and incorporates the most durable construction method known to fine woodworking - mortise and tenon joinery. All through-tenons are pinned with oak dowels to ensure that the joint will never weaken. After hand-sanding and assembly, the furniture is carefully inspected to ensure our highest quality, branded with our logo, and then moved on to the finish department where stain is applied. Our craftsmen will remove stain in certain places to simulate the wear patterns that develop over a long period of time (as on the arm of a chair where your hand will continuously, and lovingly, rub the wood). Once the color is perfected, it is sealed with orange shellac, and finally finished with a coat of hand-rubbed, pigmented paste wax. The effect of our aging process is subtle, but the result is a beautiful piece of Hile Studio furniture that blends perfectly with fine antiques as well as contemporary furnishings.

All of our hardware is solid hand-hammered copper designed by Hile Studio and produced by Arts & Crafts Hardware in Warren, MI. Office furniture drawers are all equipped with stainless steel ball bearing slides. The spring units used in our seating have hand-tied springs. Our leather is the finest "Grade A" Austrian hide referred to as "naked". Naked leather does not have the top coat of pigmentation added that gives many leathers a shiny finish. We believe naked leather creates a more natural look complementing the authentic nature of our furniture.

From construction methods to materials used, from staining techniques to hardware, every step is taken to ensure that each piece of furniture we make will live up to the wonderful standards set during the Arts and Crafts period and provide you, our customer, with something that will become a cherished heirloom for generations to come. Enjoy!
